The level connection is the fact with money attached. The 26-Foot Rule
Two companion state watercraft rules, one per county, cover the whole lake. On the Ottawa County side - the waters adjacent to Ferrysburg, the Village of Spring Lake, and Spring Lake Township - rule R 281.770.9 draws two lines. A vessel under 26 feet must hold slow-no-wake speed within 200 feet of any shore, dock, or pierhead. A vessel 26 feet or longer must hold slow-no-wake speed at all times, everywhere on the lake. Rule R 281.761.7 applies the same two limits to the Muskegon County waters at Fruitport.
Read that second line again before you fall for a 30-foot cruiser. The boat can live on Spring Lake; it can never make real speed there. If skiing, tubing, or a fast hull is the point of the purchase, start with the rule text, then pick the boat.
The run in from the big lake is its own lesson in slow water. I once rode a jet ski from Lake Michigan through the channel and up into Spring Lake, and by the time the lake finally opened up, my back ached and the no-wake crawl had stopped being fun miles earlier. A 35-Foot Ceiling at the Bridge
Boats reach Spring Lake through its outlet channel at Ferrysburg, and the Route 104 bridge crosses that channel as a fixed span. NOAA Coast Pilot 6 lists it at 111 feet wide with 35 feet of vertical clearance above low water datum. Fixed means exactly that: nothing opens, so a sailboat whose mast needs more than 35 feet is never entering this lake.
From the channel, the route to the big water runs down the lower Grand River, under the US-31 drawbridge, past the harbor docks, and out between the pierhead lights. The drawbridge gives 25 feet when closed and opens for pleasure craft on a federal schedule, so a boat under 25 feet of air draft never waits, while one between 25 and 35 feet learns the opening times by heart. One Lake, Four Local Governments
The Village of Spring Lake holds the outlet end, on what its own history describes as a peninsula surrounded on three sides by Spring Lake and the Grand River. The settlement was known as Mill Point when its first frame house went up in the 1840s, was platted in 1869, and today keeps a guarded sandy beach and a run of public access points along the water.

Spring Lake has been actively managed since 1997, when the Spring Lake Lake Board was established under Michigan's Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. The board seats a lakefront property owner, representatives of each municipality on the lake, and both counties.
Its headline work is phosphorus control. The lake was treated with alum in 2005, a treatment the board credits with improving conditions for nearly 15 years, and a second treatment finished on May 21, 2025, applied over the roughly 650 acres deeper than 15 feet. Alum binds phosphorus into the sediments so it cannot rise and feed algae.
The funding is the part owners feel. The program runs on a special assessment on approximately 1,400 benefitting properties around the lake, under a ten-year budget approved at public hearings in the summer of 2023.
